What kind of replacement pump do you need? It depends on the application. Hydraulic equipment designs for oil rigs, heavy construction, heavy lifting cranes, and other heavy industries require specific types of industrial pumps depending on the application. For example, centrifugal pumps providing a high flow rate are popular for oil and gas for water injection and crude oil of a lower viscosity, often as part of a network of pumps. Their design limits them to horizontal fluid transfer, or lifts under about 15 feet. For higher viscosity, gear pumps are often used.
Gear pumps with a fixed displacement are also common for hydraulic systems used in truck cranes, where the meshing gears that displace and pressurize the fluid produce a pressure that varies according to the drive speed. Raising, lowering, and extending the boom can require thousands of PSI, and higher-capacity gear pumps can supply this kind of stable pressure, varied under control of the operator. Lower pressure capacity gear pumps also serve to deploy the counterweights, steering, and outriggers that stabilize the crane. More sophisticated variable-displacement piston pumps are sometimes used for efficiency, pressure, control, and low-leak advantages.
On the heavy equipment job site, hardworking, simple, and low-cost gear pumps are a popular choice. Gear ring pumps using planetary gear motion instead of two meshed gears are also used. The advantages of piston pumps, operating in axial or radial configuration, make them useful here as well.
