Seen everywhere from construction sites to mining operations, the “loader” (also known as front-end loader) is maybe the most recognizable piece of hydraulics-based heavy equipment we are familiar with. It is so common because it is so versatile and able to be utilized for dozens of tasks from snow removal to demolition to construction. And its versatility is a direct result of the hydraulic systems incorporated into its design.

The “scoop,” or deep bucket on the front of the loader, is controlled by a series of hydraulic cylinders and valves. This system is made up of a swing arm hydraulic cylinder and a rotating bucket hydraulic cylinder. These cylinders are powered by a multi-directional control valve which allows for hydraulic fluid to be routed in multiple directions simultaneously, allowing simultaneous adjustment of the facing and rotation of the scoop rather than having to make one adjustment, then another in series. These cylinders are supported by the usual system of hydraulic pumps, piping, and filters.

It should be noted that the versatility of the loader is further increased by the modular nature of the scoop. On many models of loader, the bucket can be replaced with various components like forklifts or drills, all powered by the same hydraulic systems that are used for the front scoop. This provides a tremendous amount of versatility for a single piece of heavy equipment and helps account for the popularity of the front-end loader across industries.
